Exclusive: 2021 Olympics confirm first COVID-19 positive in Tokyo Olympic Village

The Tokyo Olympic Committee on Saturday announced someone within the Olympic Village has tested positive for COVID-19 — the first such result in the Olympic athletes’ living quarters.

According to event organizers, the unidentified village resident — labeled “Games-related personnel” — is currently under 14-day quarantine at a hotel after testing positive on Friday. The person, listed as a non-resident of Japan, is one of 44 people related to the 2021 Games to have produced a positive test result through Saturday, July 17.

The unidentified resident’s positive result occurred a week before the Olympic opening ceremony, on Friday.

It’s uncertain whether the person was fully vaccinated, and Olympic organizers have declined to identify them, citing privacy concerns. That said, Seiko Hashimoto, president of the Tokyo Olympic Committee, said organizers “are sparing no efforts” to keep the Olympic Village safe.

Athletes, coaches and other personnel from more than 200 countries are arriving in Tokyo in advance of the Olympic opening ceremony this week. Their arrivals also coincide with the growing prevalence of the coronavirus Delta variant which, coupled with growing coronavirus numbers in Japan, prompted Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga to declare a state of emergency in the Tokyo, Kanagawa, Chiba and Saitama prefectures in the Kanto region on July 8. It will run through Aug. 22, meaning the 2021 Games — which run from July 23 through Aug. 8 — will not include fan attendance.

“It is regrettable that we are delivering the Games in a very limited format, facing the spread of coronavirus infections,” Hashimoto said in response to Suga’s mandate.

Athletes do not need to be vaccinated to perform in the 2021 Games, though they will undergo daily COVID-19 tests for the duration of the Olympics.
