Andy Ruiz Jr survived a second round knockdown to win his comeback fight against Chris Arreola on Saturday night.

The Mexican-American returned to the ring for the first time since December 2019 when he lost his rematch, and world titles, to Anthony Joshua.

It was a much leaner Ruiz we saw in the ring as he shed two stone ahead of the fight in California.

Things did not go to plan early on, though, when he was forced down to his knee following an overhand right to his temple.

He recovered and went on to comfortably beat Arreola on points with the judges scoring it 117-110, 118-109, 118-109 in his favour.

“Chris is a veteran and a hard puncher. We did what we had to do tonight,” Ruiz said afterwards.

“We got the victory that we wanted. I was at my lowest point and now I have to climb the ladder again. I’m thankful for the victory and I’m ready to move on to the next.

“He got me with a good clean right hand in the second round. I was too over-confident and dropped my hand a bit. Hats off to him.

“We just kept pushing and pushing. I switched up and started focusing on counter-punching and working the body.

“I felt a little rust and I know other fighters can relate to that.”

Although his opponent accepted that Ruiz deserved the points win, he did not entirely agree with the scorecard.

“Did he win? Fine. But don’t tell me you’re only going to give me two or three rounds,” he said. “Fuck that! I’m gonna be like Dr. Dre, all y’all can suck my motherfuckin’ d***!”

There were some bizarre scenes in the crowd with several brawls breaking out among the spectators in attendance.

Ruiz now moves to a 34-2 record and will be looking at future opponents. Ahead of the fight, he mentioned Deontay Wilder as a possible contender.

Wilder has not returned to the ring since losing the WBC heavyweight title to Tyson Fury in February 2020.
