Exclusive: England captain Harry Kane is ‘fully focussed’ at Euro 2020 and a great example to follow, insists Phil Foden, who claims midfielders didn’t create enough for their captain against Scotland
Perry Groves believes Antonio Conte had ‘too much ambition’ for Tottenham as talks broke down over a move to bring the Italian to north London.
Spurs were in advanced negotiations with the former Chelsea, Juventus and Inter Milan boss, but they broke down due to demands he made.
The north London club were hopeful of appointing Conte after a long pursuit for Jose Mourinho’s successor, following his sacking in April.
According to widespread reports, the Italian held reservations about the club’s ambition and wasn’t convinced by the project Daniel Levy proposed.
While Spurs were worried about the financial position they would be put in if they gave him the salary and transfer budget he wanted.
Former Arsenal winger Groves told talkSPORT: “You can’t guarantee winning titles, but you can guarantee you will be competitive. Even when he did has apprenticeship in Serie B with Bari, he won the title with them.
“Then he wins the title with Juve, then he wins the title with Chelsea and goes back and wins the title with Inter Milan to stop Juventus winning ten on the spin.
“You look at his track record in charge of Italy, they went out in the quarter-finals to Germany, so he improves every team.
“If you get someone like him, you are getting one of the top five managers in the world. The problem Spurs have is that he would not just want a load of money for himself but a big transfer budget to get the players he wants.
“He would want his own staff in as well and would want to be in control of recruitment.
“Daniel Levy is not going to let someone have that power and I think he had too much ambition for Spurs.”
There are serious doubts about the future of star striker Harry Kane, who is believed to have told the club he wants to leave this summer.
Their entire squad needs an overhaul and Ian Holloway believes Spurs need to focus on the team first before anything else.
“Their team turn up and play whenever they fancy it,” Holloway told talkSPORT. “Mourinho calmed down, but how many times did he say it?
“He wasn’t as aggressive as he had been, but I don’t blame him for being aggressive.
“If your footballers are earning money for every second of every day then you should be able to tell them exactly what you think and say it in the press because that’s what they should be doing.
“Tottenham, for me, have underachieved for so long now and are going to lose their best, one of their own, Harry Kane.
“Where’s the ambition? Building a stadium does not show ambition. You should build the team first and then the team will get your stadium built.”
