Exclusive: Antonio Conte suggests Tottenham ‘project’ didn’t convince him as former Inter Milan boss insists money not a motivating factor

Antonio Conte insists money is not his motivation and he needs to believe in a ‘project’ after talks with Tottenham collapsed.

The former Chelsea boss, who resigned as Inter Milan head coach last month after two years in charge, was on the verge of taking the Spurs job before negotiations fell through.

There have been varying reports over why Conte and Spurs failed to reach an agreement, with claims he was not convinced that he would backed by Daniel Levy in the transfer market, while there were also suggestions of ‘unrealistic demands’ on the Italian’s part.

Spurs are now closing in the appointment of former Roma boss Paulo Fonseca.

Conte, meanwhile, remains on the hunt for a new club and has hinted at what stopped him from joining the Premier League side as Jose Mourinho’s replacement.

“Generally, I like the challenges and I’ve accepted many of them during my career,” he told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“Even the top clubs I coached were never the favourites when I arrived. However, if there’s something that doesn’t convince me I prefer not to accept regardless of the money.”

When discussing his resignation at Inter, Conte insisted his decisions are never based on money.

He said: “The market sets the price, but had I been obsessed by money, I would have stayed where I was in the past. I would have accepted compromises and obtained new contracts.

“I look for the projects instead and I am ready to stay at home if something is not convincing me. It has to do with vision, honesty and principles.”

With Conte off the table, Fonseca is understood to be the first choice of Tottenham’s incoming director of football Fabio Paratici.

Paratici’s arrival at Spurs is set to be announced this week following his departure from Juventus after a hugely successful 11-year stint and he is already involved in his new club’s lengthy managerial search.

It has been 52 days since Spurs sacked Mourinho, who has since found work as Fonseca’s replacement at Roma.

Mourinho will join Roma in the summer – after being part of talkSPORT’s exclusive European Championship coverage.
