Exclusive: Arsenal ‘shopping in different market’ to Manchester United as Ben White fee compared to Raphael Varane

Arsenal are shopping in a different market to Manchester United and that means they have to pay a premium to sign players like Ben White.

That’s the view of talkSPORT’s Jamie O’Hara who was reacting to the news of White joining the Gunners in a £50million deal on Friday.

It has been pointed out that four-time Champions League winner Raphael Varane will join United in a deal worth £42million.

Varane was entering the last year of his contract at Real Madrid, with the Spanish side deciding to cash in now rather than lose the 28-year-old for nothing next summer.

That, in part, explains why the Red Devils were able to get a cut-price deal, but the comparisons between White and Varane will be made.

Sol Campbell told talkSPORT earlier this week that Arsenal should be battling the Red Devils for the France World Cup winner.

When speaking about the Ben White deal, O’Hara said: “He’s not unproven, he’s been playing in the Premier League. He’s played for England.

“He’s not Varane, but Arsenal are shopping in a different market.

“You have to pay a premium for an English player, he’s a lot younger and Manchester United can attract players like Varane.

“They are in the Champions League and Manchester United are shopping in a different window.

“They can probably give him more money, more wages and can probably attract a player for a little bit less and pay a lower fee because they can go for that type of player.

“Arsenal would love to have Varane in their side and love to pay £42million for him. Varane is not going to go there, so they aren’t shopping in that window.

“They can’t attract a Varane right now. They can attract a Ben White, who is an up-and-coming talent, and you have to pay a premium for him, but you are getting a very good player.

“They are putting a squad together that is a very young and exciting squad. I have to say, I’ve been impressed with what they have done so far.”
