Ben White says it was an ‘unbelievable moment’ telling his parents he’d received a late call-up to England’s Euro 2020 squad.

The centre-back was given the nod by Gareth Southgate after Trent Alexander-Arnold was forced to withdraw with an injury.

It’s been some rise for White, who is representing the national team after just one season playing Premier League football.

The 23-year-old paid tribute to his parents for helping him get to this point.

“It’s literally all down to mum and dad,” White told talkSPORT. “I definitely wouldn’t be where I am right now if they didn’t help me along the way with all the stuff that they did.

“I gave my mum a ring straight away and she was crying on the phone. It was obviously an unbelievable moment and unfortunately didn’t get to share it with them [in person] but I had a long journey home.”

However, White may owe a little bit more to his mum, Carole, who went above and beyond to pick her son up after he was rejected by Southampton as a 16-year-old.

Asked whether he ever considered quitting football, White added: “I don’t think so. It’s always been my passion.

“The day that I did get released I spoke to my mum and she said ‘do you want to be a footballer?’

“I said ‘yeah’ so she got on the phone to different clubs and managed to get me trials at different places.”
