Exclusive: Callum Wilson takes Alan Shearer’s iconic No.9 Newcastle shirt as Joelinton is handed new squad number

Callum Wilson is officially Newcastle’s new No.9.

The 29-year-old has taken the iconic number, which was worn by Magpies hero Alan Shearer, at Joelinton’s expense.

Joelinton, who has scored just six Premier League since joining Newcastle for a club-record £40million fee from Hoffenheim in 2019, has vacated the highly covered shirt number and moved to No.7.

Wilson enjoyed a promising debut season at St James’ Park following his £20m move from Bournemouth last summer.

The England striker netted 12 goals in 26 appearances as Newcastle finished the 2020/21 season in 12th place.

Now, he will wear the same number that Shearer donned as the legendary striker scored 206 goals on Tyneside.

Wilson missed the Magpies’ last three games of last season with a hamstring injury.

However, he has recovered from that setback and is training with the squad ahead of their pre-season fixtures.

Newcastle face Harrogate, York City, Doncaster, Rotherham, Burton and Norwich in friendlies before their Premier League campaign gets underway against West Ham on August 15.

Magpies boss Steve Bruce says he is happy with his side’s pre-season preparations so far.

He told NUFC TV: “What a difference. What a difference a year makes, we had a storm last year, it even blew the tent away.

“It’s been warm, hot, and all the rest of it, but the preparations have gone as best we can.”
