Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou will be facing a ‘whirlwind’ of pressure before the Scottish Premiership season has even begun, Hoops legend Paul Lambert believes.

For the fourth-consecutive season, Celtic failed to reach the Champions League, losing to Midtjylland in the second qualifying round on Wednesday night.

With an inexperienced side and a worrying lack of transfer activity thus far, the size of Postecoglou’s job was laid bare in Denmark.

“The season hasn’t even started yet and the criticism will be rife up there,” Lambert, who made more than 200 appearances for the Scottish giants, told talkSPORT.

“I know exactly what it’s like. People will be having their digs at him and flying things into him.

“The guy will be thinking it’s a whirlwind he’s in at the minute. It hasn’t even started, he hasn’t even come across Rangers yet.

“The job is totally massive because he’s got to rebuild and he needs time.

“It’s whether that Celtic crowd will give you time.”

Postecoglou, who was announced as Neil Lennon’s successor three-and-a-half months after the Scot’s exit was confirmed, has already hit out at the club’s lack of readiness for the new campaign.

The Hoops finished 25 points behind Old Firm rivals Rangers last season, while the departures of Scott Brown and Kristoffer Ajer mean Celtic need to do serious business in the summer market.

Lambert, the former Ipswich, Aston Villa and Norwich manager, insists this should’ve been sorted before Champions League qualifying, but backs Celtic to return to its former glory in time.

“I don’t think they’ve got enough big players to carry the younger ones through,” he added.

“Their back four at the end of the game last night, they were just kids and that should never happen at Celtic’s level.

“They have to go and get some men who can handle that.

“You just have to get your head under the parapet and battle through, and you will come through it because the club’s too big to accept what’s happening to it.

“They’ve still got 50,000 season ticket holders, which is phenomenal, so they’ll commit their numbers.

“But when you’re Celtic, you have to win, and at the moment they’re not doing that.”
