Chelsea’s lack of interest in signing Ben White from Brighton this summer was a surprise, according to Danny Mills.

White is close to completing a £50million move to Arsenal and questions have been raised over whether he should have been setting his sights higher.

The Gunners finished eighth in the Premier League last season and will not be playing in Europe this coming campaign.

Reports suggest Chelsea are in the market for a new centre-back this summer, with claims they may try an hijack Tottenham’s move for Jules Kounde.

The Blues also want a new striker with Erling Haaland, Harry Kane and Robert Lewandowski all linked.

And former Man City, Leeds and Charlton defender Mills believes White is an improvement on what they’ve already got at the back.

He told talkSPORT: “If you go Haaland or Kane, it’s job done. Good chance of winning the league, but you’ve got to be realistic about that.

“Defensively they are very strong.

“Go back to my point about Ben White, would Chelsea not be interested? Ben White has got to be better than Andreas Christensen surely?

“I think so and Arsenal fans probably wouldn’t swap Ben White for Andreas Christensen.

“I’m a little bit surprised that no top four club, a more successful club in recent seasons, have come in for Ben White.

“If Chelsea do need a centre-back, he’d slot in there perfectly.

“He can play in a two, he can play in a three. He can play in midfield if he had to. Good defender and is great on the ball.

“From his perspective, he would be playing Champions League football with a possible chance of winning it again and a chance of winning the Premier League.”
