Hafthor Bjornsson may be more than 55kg lighter than when he played ‘The Mountain’ in Game of Thrones, but he believes he could ‘crush him within a minute’ in a fight.
Thor is a hugely popular figure thanks to his strongman exploits, winning World’s Strongest Man in 2018, and also for his role on the hit HBO series.
At his peak, the Icelandic athlete tipped the scales at around 205kg and his 6ft 9in frame made him an imposing figure.
His character in Game of Thrones, Gregor Clegane, was a much-feared warrior and (spoiler alert) famously crushed the head of Oberyn Martell in one episode.
Since the series ended, Thor, who is a Reign Total Body Fuel ambassador, has transitioned to boxing as he prepares to take on Eddie Hall, his nemesis from strongman.
That fight was due to be this weekend, but an injury forced its postponement and instead he will take on arm-wrestler Devon Larratt.
Thor’s body transformation has been remarkable and is a lot leaner than before – now weighing in at around 150kg.
So who would win in a hypothetical fight between Thor the boxer and The Mountain from Game of Thrones?
“The person who I am today would absolutely kick The Mountain’s ass,” Thor told talkSPORT.com.
“Much better shape, and I would just use my reach and would crush The Mountain within a minute.”
Thor admitted the workouts have been gruelling to get himself into shape for boxing, but loves the feeling of pushing his body to the absolute limit.
He added: “It’s been extremely challenging physically and mentally. Boxing is a hardcore sport. It’s very difficult to get into a good boxing shape.
“I never in a million years would have thought that this sport was this hard.
“I don’t know what it is, every single session, it doesn’t matter how… you get in better shape. The more you throw, the more you move, so it’s always hard and it doesn’t matter how good a shape you are going to be in.
“Each and every session is a grind basically.
“I never thought ‘why am I doing this?’ I truly believe I was put on this earth to become an athlete.
“I love being an athlete and love to push myself.
“I just have a passion for punishing my body. It’s kind of weird, but I love to push my body and to see where I can take it.
“I can’t complain. Yeah my body is sore and sometimes I’m going through injuries, but this is what I love to do and keep me going.”
That fight with Eddie Hall will eventually take place and looks likely to happen in March 2022.
