You heard it here first: Mike Perry says Jake Paul gave him a better spar than Darren Till.
UFC fighter Perry was 11-2 at one point, but having only won three times in his last 10 and once in his last five, the 29 year old has been on a bad slide.
Jake Paul is a 3-0 boxer with three knockouts. He is taking on former UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley on August 28 in the hope of extending his unbeaten run and Woodley seems to represent a rise in competition.
Till is now a UFC middleweight and appeared to be one win away from fighting for the title against Israel Adesanya until he broke his collarbone. He will now face Derek Brunson on August 14.
The rivalry between Perry and Till has become the stuff of legends among MMA fans.
It seemingly all started with a now infamous sparring session in 2018. While Perry has suggested he ‘battered’ Till in the spar, but the Brit has refused to divulge exactly what happened.
Either way, Perry is now saying that YouTuber turned pro boxer Paul is more of a problem than Till.
“Jake Paul was a better spar than Till,” Perry told The Mac Life in a recent interview (h/t MMA Mania). “That was an awkward situation with the gloves and shit. Yeah, definitely though.”
“Making you think he’s gonna engage then doesn’t,” Perry said about Paul’s strengths as a boxer. “He’s got long reach, he’s got different tricks, he taught me something. First round he started doing something and I was like ‘okay’ … it wasn’t doing damage, but it was like keeping him at bay.”
Perry, still only 29, has time to turn his UFC career around but given his recent record, he needs to start winning sooner rather than later.
Till is hoping to headline a UFC show in London in August and Adesanya has openly said that defending his title against Till excites him the most.
Whatever happened in that spar, the two men are on very different paths right now.
