Liverpool’s midfield situation could become far clearer in the coming weeks as the club look set to make their mark in the transfer market.

The Reds are reportedly about to test Atletico Madrid’s resolve over star player Saul Niguez with a £34.3million bid, while Jordan Henderson now looks set to stay at the club.

There has been plenty of discussion about Jurgen Klopp’s midfield options over the last few weeks.

It was initially reported that Jordan Henderson could leave the club this summer following a stall in contract negotiations.

The Liverpool captain currently has two years left on his deal and several publications have stated that the club’s hierarchy may want to sell him to avoid a repeat of Gini Wijnaldum’s situation where he left for free.

That rumour has however been quashed with Eurosport stating Henderson will not be sold this summer.

“In terms of Henderson, he is not going to leave in this window,” said Dean Jones. “There’s no chance Liverpool are going to let him leave at the same time as Wijnaldum because then your whole team starts to fall apart.”

With the club captain set to stay, Klopp can now focus on bringing in Wijnaldum’s replacement with Saul the most likely option according to various sources.

Spanish outlet Diario Sport have reported that the Reds have made an offer of €40million (£34.3m). Whether that offer is accepted or not, Liverpool are making it clear that they are definitely in the market for a new central midfielder.

The club recently secured an extra £17m in funds following the sales of Marko Grujic and Taiwo Awoniyi to Porto and Union Berlin respectively.

Whilst Saul may not be a Liverpool player by the time the transfer window ends, his current manager Diego Simeone is resigned to losing him this summer.

He told AS: “I have spoken with him and we cannot put aside the rumours and what is talked about. If you stay, you work as you have always done and if you leave, the door will be open in the best way.

“We have been together for eight years, I think we gave him everything we had as a coach and he as a footballer. If he has to leave, a big hug, we wish him the best and continue being friends, as always. Either to Barcelona or elsewhere.”

Saul began his career at Rayo Vallecano before moving to Atletico where he has played more than 400 games for their ‘B’ and first team.

Last season he played 33 times in the league and played a huge part in Atletico’s success as they secured the La Liga title for the first time in seven years.
