Liverpool could entertain offers for captain Jordan Henderson, according to stunning reports that claim no progress has been made over a new contract for the midfielder.

Henderson, 31, has two years left on his Anfield deal and talks are underway over an extension that could see him end his career with the Merseyside club.

However, the club and skipper have yet to come to an agreement, which has prompted fears he could leave the club in the same way Steven Gerrard did in 2015 and Georginio Wijnaldum did this summer.

Henderson has cemented is name as a legend in his ten years at the Anfield club, having helped them to glory in the Champions League and Premier League.

Nevertheless, according to The Athletic, the Reds hierarchy and Fenway Sports Group chiefs are reluctant to offer a new multi-year and big money contract to a player of his age.

PSG also do not want to have a similar situation to that of Wijnaldum, who ran down his contract at Anfield before departing for Paris Saint-Germain this summer.

And that means they would be willing Henderson to leave the club before his contract expires, rather than allowing another key player to depart for nothing.

The report also suggests that dialogue with Henderson and his representatives is ongoing, but the situation is described as ‘complicated and sensitive’.

With two years left on his contract, Henderson could still attract a reasonable fee, and it is claimed Paris Saint-Germain and Atletico Madrid are both interested and monitoring the situation.

Mauricio Pochettino is said to be an admirer of the England international and could look to reunite him with Wijnaldum at PSG.

The report adds that Jurgen Klopp finds himself stuck in these situations, with the decision over contract offers coming from the people above him.

The German boss made it clear he wanted Wijnaldum to stay, and yet an agreement could not be made with the Netherlands international and he was allowed to leave.

Henderson is one of Klopp’s generals in the team and the duo share a close bond. There is no question the manager would want the club to secure the captain’s future, and yet it is clear FSG do not simply do what the coach wants.

It is claimed there is a feeling within Liverpool that any derisory contract offer for such a key player in the Reds’ recent history will be met with disappointment from Henderson, and a sign he is not really wanted by the club.

It draws comparisons with Anfield icon Gerrard’s sad exit in 2015, when he departed at the end of his contract after what he believes was a halfhearted attempt to keep him.

The report makes it clear Henderson has not rejected an offer from Liverpool but that, ‘clearly, if what is currently on the table was acceptable then a deal would already have been signed’.

It also adds that this situation is unlikely to be allowed, at least by the player, to drag on for another 12 months to when he has just one year left on his deal, and there is a feeling a departure is ‘more likely’ than a renewal if Liverpool chiefs don’t ‘engage in more fair terms’ soon.

It has been widely suggested Liverpool’s main focus this summer will be to secure the long-term futures of their top stars, with new deals for goalkeeper Alisson, Fabinho, Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane – also due to expire in 2023 – in progress.

Meanwhile, the Reds’ pre-season tour of Austria got underway last week, although without Henderson who is still on holiday after England’s run to the Euro 2020 final.

On July 20 they are to play 30-minute ‘mini-games’ behind closed doors against FC Wacker Innsbruck and Stuttgart.

Three days later they will take on boss Jurgen Klopp’s old club Mainz in the Greisbergers Betten-Arena, with a 3,500 capacity.

Then on July 29 they will play Hertha Berlin at the Tivoli Stadium, with a 15,000 capacity.
