Exclusive: Kumar Mangat’s Drishyam 2- The Resumption Lands In Legal Trouble

Drishyam starring Ajay Devgn and Tabu was a hit among the audience and it is still considered as one of the finest thrillers. The movie was the remake of the original Malayalam hit, Drishyam.

The venture was directed by Kumar Mangat and produced by Viacom 18 Motion Pictures. It was highly appreciated by the audience. According to reports, the director was set to plan the second sequel with Ajay and Tabu reprising their roles again. The venture was reportedly under his company, Panorama Studios.

But Viacom 18 has sent him notice with regards to the legal right of Drishyam 2-The Resumption. Kumar has responded to a news portal with the notice that his company has acquired all the legal rights of the firm. He further revealed that they will continue to make it regardless. However, Viacom 18 Motion Pictures’ spokesperson has revealed that Kumar cannot make the film independently or without their involvement.

Viacom has legally objected against Kumar’s move as they claim, they also own the rights of the movie. The original Drishyam 2 featured Malayalam superstar Mohanlal as he reprised his role. Drishyam in Hindi premiered in 2015 as it was directed by late director Nishikant Kamat. The venture was produced by Viacom 18 Motion Pictures, Panorama Studios, and Kumar.

According to a source, “Viacom 18 Motion Pictures have told Mangat that they cannot be dissociated from this project. They have also told him that he cannot make ‘Drishyam 2’ on his own or with someone else. The very fact that Mangat yet went ahead to set up the stage for it has irked them and hence, they’ve filed a legal complaint against him. The first hearing of the case in question is going to be held, very soon.”

However, another source revealed that Kumar had informed Viacom 18 Motion Pictures about his intention but they had chosen to ignore him.

This tussle has led to a legal issue between Kumar Mangat and Viacom 18 Motion Pictures. It is still unclear if fans who loved Drishyam will get another sequel. Until then, they can switch to the original Malayalam movie and its sequel which is a hit among the audience.
