Manchester United hope extending manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s contract has given them pole position in the race to sign Erling Haaland.
The Borussia Dortmund striker is arguably the most wanted player on the planet after a stunning start to his professional career.
Chelsea appear to want the Norwegian ace this summer but will be forced to stump up an enormous £150million for his services.
The Blues are trying to beat their rivals for his signature and sign him now rather than wait an extra year, despite the fact he would cost just £68m due to the release clause in his contract.
There appears to be no progress on their attempts to land the 21-year-old and now Man United believe they can steal a march on their rivals.
Haaland was managed by Solskjaer back at the start of his career when the duo were at Molde in their homeland.
The Red Devils legend gave Haaland his debut in April 2017 and earlier this year it was reported they remain in regular contact.
And The Sun reports given Solskjaer a new three-year deal has boosted their chances of signing the striker.
Haaland scored 41 goals in 41 games in his first full season with Dortmund, underlining why he’s so in demand.
For now, though, the Old Trafford faithful will have to be happy with the signings of Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane.
The duo arrive for a combined £116m and are set to help the club lead a charge for the Premier League title.
But they will have to dethrone a Man City side who could be adding Jack Grealish and Harry Kane to their ranks.
