Manchester United expect to announce the signing of Jadon Sancho soon, with only paperwork separating the England winger from his move to Old Trafford.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer revealed on Sunday the deal for the Borussia Dortmund star is all-but done, and also responded to the reports surrounding an agreement for Raphael Varane.
United kicked off their pre-season campaign with a 2-1 victory over Wayne Rooney’s Derby County at Pride Park.
Solskjaer spoke to the media after the match and spoke openly about the club’s transfer targets, as well as the future of Jesse Lingard.
The Norwegian hailed Lingard for his performance against the Rams, in his first game for the Red Devils in 190 days, and said the West Ham target is very much in his plans for the season.
But he also gave fans what they’ve been waiting for – an update on Sancho’s impending move to Old Trafford.
The Premier League giants have already confirmed they have reached an agreement over a deal for the Borussia Dortmund winger, said to be around £73million for a player they were quoted £100m for last summer.
But a week has passed since that announcement, with no further official news over the deal, and supporters are getting restless.
Replies to United’s posts on Twitter during the Derby friendly were littered with messages from fans to ‘announce Sancho’.
And Solskjaer revealed after the game that they shouldn’t have to wait much longer.
“There are a couple of things on the paperwork and we hope we can announce one player who has been very much written about,” said the United boss.
“But we’re still working on it. I don’t think it’s a secret that we’ve made a deal with Dortmund, but all the paperwork hasn’t been done so he’s still a Dortmund player.
“I’ll talk about players we sign when we’ve signed them and not when they’re with other clubs.”
Solskjaer was then asked about the rumours surrounding Real Madrid defender Varane, with claims they have already agreed a £50m deal for the French World Cup winner.
There has been no official word on those rumours, either, and when asked how close United are to signing Varane, the manager replied:
“Haha… same again!”
Solskjaer added: “We want to have a strong squad, we want to challenge and we want to improve on last season.”
United have also been linked with a move for England full-back Kieran Trippier amid claims the Atletico Madrid LaLiga title winner is ‘desperate’ for a return to the Premier League this summer.
Arsenal legend Ray Parlour joined talkSPORT to discuss what could be another big-spending summer for the Red Devils, and said the additions of Sancho, Varane and Trippier will see them challenge Man City for the title this season.
“Certainly Varane is a top quality player, I was really impressed with him during the Euros, he’s an excellent defender and that will be a great signing for Manchester United,” said the pundit on Friday’s talkSPORT Breakfast.
“We know what Trippier can do. It means Man United could play three at the back and while Wan-Bissaka is the main man, Trippier can play left-back as well, so he’s very good cover and he’s a great pro as well.
“He was excellent around the England camp and he is very experienced now after two great years at Atletico, so he’ll be another good signing for the money.
“That’s what Man United have got to do, they’ve got to compete and get close to Man City. You can’t stand still in the Premier League.
“Maguire and Stones were a very good partnership during the Euros and I can imagine Maguire and Varane will be a decent partnership.
“If you’ve got a good defence you’ve always got a chance, and with the attacking players they’ve got, and with Sancho coming in, it will give them a much better chance of getting closer and challenging for that title.”
