Eating lots of soup is the key to Ferran Torres becoming as good as Jamie Vardy, says Pep Guardiola.

Ahead of Manchester City’s clash at Leicester on Saturday, Guardiola dismissed suggestions that Torres is like Vardy, claiming he only said they have similar movements on the pitch.

At 21 years old, Torres still has time to get near the Foxes frontman’s level and Guardiola believes having plenty of soup will help him manage that.

“I didn’t compare Ferran Torres with James Vardy, I said Ferran had quite similar movements,” Guardiola said.

“Ferran has to eat a lot of soups in the dinner time to be compared with Vardy what he has done in his career. Vardy is 33/34, Ferran is 21/22. Ferran is just the start and Vardy has done amazing, outstanding.”

However, Guardiola has missed out a few key parts of Vardy’s matchday diet, which has been a big talking point in the past.

Vardy claims to guzzle three cans of Red Bull and wolf down a cheese and ham omelette with baked beans on a matchday.

He also says he would have a glass of port the night before every match in the 2015/16 season, which saw Leicester win the Premier League.

“With a traditional 3pm Saturday kick-off, I’ll have a can of Red Bull as soon as I wake up, which is gone in 30 seconds,” he told Men’s Health.

“I don’t have breakfast and won’t eat anything until I have a cheese and ham omelette with baked beans at 11.30am. I wash that down with another Red Bull, which I also neck quickly.

“We get into the dressing room an hour and a half before kick-off, and I’ll have a third can of Red Bull straight away.”

He also says he would have a glass of port the night before every match in the 2015/16 season, which saw Leicester win the Premier League.

“I can’t say why it started, because I genuinely don’t know, but I decided to drink a glass of port on the eve of every game in the 2015-16 season,” he continued.

“I’m not normally superstitious but from the moment I scored against Sunderland on the opening day, I didn’t want to change anything.

Vardy broke the record for Premier League goals in consecutive matches when he had port the night before!

“I fill a small plastic water or Lucozade bottle to halfway and just sip the port while watching television. It tastes like Ribena to me, and it helps me switch off and get to sleep a bit easier the night before a game.”
