How much would you pay to watch a circus on pay-per-view?
While a boxing bout by definition, the Floyd Mayweather vs. Logan Paul fight that took place Sunday night was missing a ref, judges, a ringleader and elephants balancing on a beach ball. The boxing GOAT and the internet celebrity went eight rounds of clinching fun for a cool 50 bucks on PPV. No winner was declared.
While the bout was billed and sold as an exhibition fight, it embodied everything that’s questionable about boxing in 2021: an eight-round glorified (and seemingly scripted) bout between a boxing star past his prime putting money before honor (to be fair, who can blame him?) and a YouTube star whose forays into a boxing ring seem like a bit of a leap after making his bones on Vine.
Mayweather, after all, seemed to knock out Paul earlier in the bout, but held him up to keep the event going.
Pointed critiques of the fight game and a dumb way to spend money aside, mixing these ingredients made for a disastrous stick of boxing dynamite, blowing up in a bad way, which people should have seen coming, given the antics leading up to June 6; Mayweather’s nickname is “Money,” after all, and Paul has made insane amounts of cash by doing … well, whatever it is that he does on the internet.
With all this in mind, nearly everyone who tuned in to last night’s circus was left unsatisfied and unentertained, from fight fans on up to boxing great Canelo Alvarez:
Logan Paul got more hugs in one night from Floyd Mayweather than he got from his dad during his entire childhood
