Exclusive: The reason Brock Lesnar WON’T be returning to WWE to face Bobby Lashley at SummerSlam

WWE are rolling out their biggest stars for SummerSlam, but Brock Lesnar will reportedly not be one of them.

According to Dave Meltzer, WWE did discuss the idea of having Lesnar return to finally face off with WWE champion Bobby Lashley.

Lashley versus Lesnar has been one of the most naturally sought-after matchups in wrestling today as both men have real MMA pedigree and have similarly insane physiques.

It’s never happened thus far. Lesnar had a full-time spell in WWE from 2002-04 and Lashley would debut in 2005.

When Lesnar returned in 2012 on a part-time basis, Lashley had left the company in 2008. The Almighty returned to WWE in 2018 and both men have been in the company together since, but no match has materialised.

According to Meltzer, WWE didn’t want to make the match at SummerSlam because Lesnar has no plans to do a substantial number of shows with WWE right now, meaning he would have to lose to Lashley with the WWE belt on the line.

Another element to the story is the thinking in Roman Reigns’ camp – which includes Lesnar friend Paul Heyman – who don’t want the stock of Lesnar diminished before he faces off against The Tribal Chief.

With Heyman in the middle of two megastars like Reigns and Lesnar, many feel that is one of the biggest programs the company could put on right now.

It’s believed many don’t want Lesnar losing to Lashley or having a no finish that would take any shine off him coming into a feud with Reigns. After all, Lesnar is already coming back from a loss to Drew McIntyre at WrestleMania 36 and he has put over the likes of Seth Rollins and, indeed, Reigns in recent years.

Instead of Lesnar, it appears as Goldberg will be the main stepping up to face Lashley. According to Fightful Select, the former four-time world champion will return to face Lashley for the WWE title and he will set that match up on this Monday’s edition of RAW.

Tonight’s SmackDown and Monday’s RAW will be the first WWE shows in front of a full arena of fans since the pandemic swept the world and shut everything down around 18 months ago.
