Exclusive: Tyson Fury training partner says ‘phenomenal’ Gypsy King has been doing 15 rounds in sauna conditions and looks unstoppable ahead of Deontay Wilder fight

Tyson Fury is in the shape of his life right now with career-defining showdowns on the horizon.

The Gypsy King will face Deontay Wilder for a third time next month as he looks to defend his WBC heavyweight crown and hopefully move on to an undisputed showdown with Anthony Joshua, all things going to plan.

Dmitriy Salita is a former training partner and close friend of Fury. He recently saw Fury in his training camp in Miami – and was very impressed with what he saw.

Salita, speaking via the MyBettingSites.co.uk blog, said: “I have just been in Miami with Tyson and he is in great shape for Wilder next month. I went to the gym and he did 15 rounds straight with no break – he’s training hard, in phenomenal condition and great spirits.

“From a purely boxing point of view he looks like he’s ready to fight next week. He’s in great shape; strength-wise, cardio-wise, skill-wise. timing-wise. He’s never going to be Mr Olympia, but don’t judge the book by the cover.

“The gym in Florida is like 97 degrees with humidity. After a couple of rounds the floor of the ring really heats up and then the ceiling heats up. It’s close to being a sauna.

“For a little 140 pounder like me it’s challenging, but for a guy like that – as big as he is – it shows he’s in phenomenal shape to be able to do 15 rounds in those conditions. He’s a truly world-class athlete in every sense of the word.

“Tyson has been training throughout the whole process to get better, learning new things. And he’s so mentally strong that I don’t see ring rust or being out of a ring as a problem. At that level it may even help him against Deontay.

“I don’t see how being out of the ring has hurt him based on what I saw in the gym.”

Eyebrows were raised when Fury ditched Ben Davidson after the Brit had guided him back from the abyss, but his partnership with Sugar Hill Steward yielded one of the all-time great heavyweight title winning performances in February 2020.

Since then, Fury has gone from strength to strength under Steward’s tutelage and Salita believes he is unstoppable.

“Sugar used to train me so I know how good Sugar is, he’s particularly good for certain types of guys like Tyson,” explained.

“Having Sugar Hill in his corner is a massive positive for him because they share the same mindset and same style of boxing.

“With Sugar Hill as his trainer, Tyson Fury is unstoppable. And he’s still learning and keeps getting better.

“Seeing him, speaking to him, seeing how he trains – he’s truly a man on a mission that believes he is one of the greatest fighters of all time, a man that believes this is his era.

“He’s the people’s champion, walking around the streets, people recognise him and he takes the time to take pictures, anyone who asks. He’s so open and people love him because he’s so approachable, easy-going, and connected to the fans.

“Before the last Wilder fight I thought it would be a 50-50 fight, but I knew Sugar Hill would be the key to victory. It was a really incredible domination and it showed how well they are matched because of their shared mentality and the Kronk style of boxing. They really mesh and I’m really happy for both that the relationship has come together.

“Tyson is driven by success in the ring, not by the purse, or by any ulterior motives. He’s driven by wanting to be the best athlete, which is very rare for fighters on that level to remain focused on the sport itself. When a fighter becomes a megastar and still knows the most important thing is the sport itself, that’s really very special and I see that in Tyson Fury.

“At its core he’s about fighting and being the best fighter he can be. He’s driven by success in the ring, that’s his number one motivation. When you have someone so talented and who has already reached the highest level and is still so driven, that’s very rare.”
